Miss Representation is a fictional cover for JUXTAPOZ Art & Culture magazine. The illustration falls under the umbrella term of diversity, however, I would rather it be considered an attempt at normalization. The viewer possibly may be uncomfortable with her nudity and assertive air, but that is the point. Consumers are used to a narrow, idealized image of Asian women which often portrays them as passive, gentle, and innocent. There are many Asian people in the media, however, majority are typecast into orientalist roles.
The destruction of Western social constructs of the East is symbolized by the bleeding plum blossoms and smeared makeup.
